paper planes

photos courtesy of paperplaneslmc.blogspot.com

I love stumbling across creative and beautiful blogs, and my latest find is a Melbourne-based blog so it's dear to my heart. Paper Planes features the illustrations of Lina Maria, an RMIT fashion graduate turned freelance drawer. Her work is beautiful and quaint, with fashion and design as the common theme in each piece.

spring racing fashion

I'm so excited that it is Spring Racing Carnival time in Melbourne again. But I'll be honest with you, having recently returned from China, the most exciting thing about the carnival for me this year is a long weekend, chocolate and some DVDs. For those of you that are going to frock-up this year, here is some outfit inspiration...

Derby Day

Cup Day

Oaks Day

operation beautiful

transforming the way you see yourself one post-it note at a time
Today I was blessed by a phenomenon that I had never heard of before: Operation Beautiful! As I closed the bathroom door at work, I saw a small yellow post-it note that simply said "Smile, you're beautiful", and in small letters down the bottom, www.operationbeautiful.com. It made my day, so I just had to investigate and see what it was all about. To my delight, I discovered that Operation Beautiful is the heart of 26 year old Caitlin, who has given all women a mission to post anonymous notes (not graffiti) in public places for other women to find. The point is that we are ALL beautiful. You are enough... just the way you are! I want to challenge all THSD readers to participate in Operation Beautiful and make someone's day today.

You are beautiful...

mushrooms and the search for melbourne's best brunch

I stumbled upon Las Chicas cafe completely by accident whilst driving through Balaclava on a weekend house-hunt. But what a happy accident it turned out to be! With a great atmosphere, friendly staff and fresh food, we hit a winner with this Carlisle street institution. I ordered mushrooms and smashed avocado on toast with an organic apple juice, a perfectly simple but amazingly executed choice. My husband ordered the behemoth breaky burrito (recommended for those with a significant appetite) with juice and a coffee. You'll be pleased to know that they have a great selection of vegetarian and gluten-free options available too so there are plenty of choices for everyone. For two very satisfying meals and 3 drinks our bill came to $42.20. Very satisfying indeed!

If you haven't checked out ASOS Australia yet, there is no time like the present! They have launched an ASOS Australia online magazine with Isabel Lucas on the cover and it has got me feeling fashion inspired on this Wednesday afternoon.

a frankie facelift

It's great to be back THSD followers! I have missed you all but thoroughly enjoyed my time in Hong Kong and China.

Yesterday Frankie magazine announced that they have given their website: www.frankie.com.au, a bit of an update. I've had a look at the new site and am quite a fan of the new blog-focused layout. With great posts including DIY floral suitcases, So Frenchy so chic and Vintage specs, it's the number one reason to visit their site. Whilst I was there I also picked up a super cute wallpaper for my new MacBook too. You've gotta be happy about that!

yummy mummy bag

A post from hot and humid Hong Kong today! Last week I embarked on the task of designing and making a maternity bag for my friend who is set to be a mum in just 3 weeks. I wanted to make sure that the bag was functional as well as beautiful and fun so I made 3 external pockets and chose a retro floral print fabric and lined it with gingham. I also had some stripe fabric offcuts and made a drawstring laundry bag to match. It was such a fun project, a real labour of love!

isabel marant SS12

photos courtesy of www.style.com

I have, thus far, resisted the urge to write dozens of posts about the latest fashion week parades around the world. Isabel Marant SS12 ready-to-wear was a real stand out for me though, so I couldn't resist a short post- enjoy!

national swap day

If you haven't heard of The Clothing Exchange... you are about to! And just in time, because Monday 17th October is National Swap Day, the biggest event on The Clothing Exchange calendar. Taking place at BMW Edge in Melbourne, tickets to attend are available here for only $25. So, I know what you're thinking now... what does the Swap Day event entail? Well, The Clothing Exchange is a professional swapping service that promotes the notion of swapping instead of shopping! When attending an event, simply bring the clothes that you don't want anymore but that you think someone else might love. Of course they need to be quality items that are still in an excellent, sellable condition. Then, you can peruse the items that other swappers have brought in update your wardrobe with a recycled and therefore, ethical option. And the outcome? A better wardrobe for you and a better world for us all. Now, don't be concerned, if you bring your fabulous designer pieces, you will not be stuck trading with somebody's daggy old trackie pants. There is a screening process that ensures that only quality pieces are accepted for trading. So get swapping dreamers!
