love your body: eat in season

background image from here

There are many things to consider when buying groceries. Is it fresh? Is it locally produced? Is it organic? Something we don't often think about though, is whether or not it's in season. There are many benefits to eating fresh vegetables, fruit and herbs that are in season:

1) Environmental: Reduce your carbon footprint by decreasing carbon emissions produced in the transportation of imported food.
2) Financial: Avoid paying a premium for the supply of out-of-season produce and in turn help to support the local economy.
3) Nutritional: Seasonal food is fresher and so it tastes better and contains more nutrients to fuel your body. Nature has a wonderful way of providing our bodies with everything they need in season.

The above list of fruit, vegetables and herbs is inspired by Ceres Fair Food. It is in no way an exhaustive list, but it is a good place to start. Have a great weekend and happy cooking!

The farmers markets in London used to list seasonal produce so you would always know what to expect when you came to buy. I really admired that!
