love people: oxfam behind the brands

Tonight as you get ready for bed, nearly 1 in 8 people on earth are going to bed hungry. The majority are farmers and their families who are supplying goods to the very industry that is failing them. But, we produce enough food to feed everyone on this planet, so why are some people going hungry while we continue to throw so much out? And what can we do about it?

The answer is simple really. But it takes commitment and it will be a journey of change. You have the power to make a difference if you can make ethical decisions when purchasing your groceries. Buy what you need, when you need it. Buy local. Buy what's in season. Research your brands.

There are a growing number of resources that you can draw on when trying to make ethical purchasing decisions. A new resource released by Oxfam is the Behind The Brands report. Looking at the 10 largest food and beverage companies in the world, the report assesses agricultural sourcing policies using publicly available information on:

1) Transparency at a corporate level
2) Women farm workers and small-scale producers in the supply chain
3) Workers on farms in the supply chain
4) Farmers (small-scale) growing the commodities
5) Land, both rights and access to land and sustainable use of it
6) Water, both rights and access to water resources and sustainable use of it
7) Climate, both relating to reducing green house gas emissions and helping farmers adapt to climate change

Find out what you need to know about the brands you buy the most here.

eat well,
